Velos Rotors is proud to introduce the Velos V-Twin D-FEND, the latest addition to our UAV portfolio tailored for defense and government operations. Based on the proven tandem rotorcraft concept, the V-Twin D-FEND combines heavy-lift capability (MTOW 52 kg / 114.5 lbs) with advanced modularity, redundant safety systems, and ruggedized performance to meet the most demanding operational requirements.

The platform features two three-bladed rotors and a durable carbon fiber fuselage with forward and aft canopy covers. A folding landing gear system and four high-voltage lithium polymer battery packs (48-56V DC) ensure stable, reliable flight even under extreme conditions. At its core, the patented twin transmission design delivers unmatched redundancy, reliability, and safety.

Building on over 10 years of proven service and hundreds of units deployed worldwide with the V3 platform, the V-Twin D-FEND extends Velos Rotors’ legacy into dual-use operations, with enhanced capabilities for GPS-denied environments, frequency hopping, encrypted transmissions and modular integration of mission-specific payloads. This combination of heavy-lift performance, robust safety, and operational versatility makes the V-Twin D-FEND an ideal solution for demanding military, governmental, and critical infrastructure missions.

Fully redundant Twin transmission design

Unlike most UAV helicopters built from adapted hobby-grade components, the Velos V-Twin D-FEND has been engineered from the ground up around three core principles: simplicity, efficiency, and reliability. Its architecture reflects Velos Rotors’ long-standing focus on safety-critical design and mission readiness for demanding defense and governmental operations.

At the heart of the platform lies the patented twin transmission system, a highly innovative drivetrain concept that sets the V-Twin D-FEND apart in its class. Leveraging the same advanced design principles as the V3 D-FEND, it allows the aircraft to continue the mission even in the event of critical component failures, ensuring operational reliability under the most challenging and uncertain conditions.

Specifically, the system can tolerate a complete failure of critical components, including motor, ESC, belt, gears, bearings, main battery, or servo, while still enabling a safe landing to protect both payload and surroundings. In such cases, the drivetrain automatically isolates the affected component without introducing additional drag to the operational part of the system.

A key advantage of this configuration is that all critical components operate at only 50% of their maximum capacity under normal conditions. This load-sharing approach reduces mechanical and electrical stress, enhancing durability and making the Velos V-Twin D-FEND an exceptionally reliable, mission-ready, and safety-focused UAV for defense and government applications.

A Mature UAV Solution for Government and Defense Needs

Building on the proven legacy of the Velos V3 D-FEND, the Velos V-Twin D-FEND takes dual-use UAV operations to the next level. The Velos V3 D-FEND paved the way with over a decade of reliable service and successful deployments in government and military applications, demonstrating resilience, precision, and adaptability across a wide range of tactical missions.

The V-Twin D-FEND expands these capabilities with enhanced heavy-lift performance, advanced modularity, and ruggedized systems designed for challenging operational environments. It is ideally suited for applications such as intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), STANAG-compliant magnetic mine detection, offshore surveillance, and other missions requiring reliable operation in harsh or GPS-denied conditions. These proven capabilities underscore the V-Twin D-FEND’s readiness to meet the stringent requirements of defense and government operators worldwide.

Customization and compatibility

The Velos V-Twin D-FEND is built on an open and flexible architecture to support the most demanding defense and government missions. The platform is equipped with the CubePilot OrangeCube flight controller. This open system allows rapid integration of additional hardware or software, enabling new capabilities to be deployed across fleets while maintaining consistent UX/UI and operational workflows for operators.

The V-Twin D-FEND also supports a wide range of industry-leading data links with plug-and-play integration, such as encrypted mesh networks that are capable of streaming HD video, flight data, and sensor information in real time, providing versatile and encrypted communications for sensitive missions. A GPS-denied navigation module allows operation in environments with limited or no signal reception, ensuring continued mission performance under challenging conditions.

For extended operational reach and redundancy, the V-Twin D-FEND is compatible with LTE, 5G, and satellite communication modules, offering additional range and automatic data failover, which are particularly valuable for BVLOS operations. Frequency options include 850-900 MHz, 1.4 GHz, 2.4 GHz, and 5.8 GHz bands as well as frequency hopping capability.

The helicopter can be controlled through a unified rugged ground control station (GCS) solution, providing operators with an intuitive and effective interface for flight management. In its standard configuration, the V-Twin D-FEND is compatible with Mission Planner and UgCS flight control software from SPH Engineering, ensuring seamless mission planning, monitoring, and management. Each system can be further configured to meet specific operational or payload requirements, offering unmatched flexibility for government and defense operations.

Extensive range of payload capabilities

VELOS V-TWIN D-FEND PAYLOADS

Building on the proven versatility of the Velos V3 D-FEND, the Velos V-Twin D-FEND expands payload capabilities with enhanced heavy-lift performance and modular integration for defense, ISR, and logistics missions. Its robust design, long endurance, and adaptable architecture make it ideally suited for a wide range of government, public safety, and humanitarian operations.

The platform can carry thermal and high-resolution cameras to support search and rescue missions, enabling teams to assess disaster zones and locate survivors in challenging terrain. Its open payload architecture also allows seamless integration of various sensors, making it valuable for environmental monitoring, border patrol, firefighting support, and other applications where real-time aerial data is critical.

Thanks to its increased MTOW and tandem rotor configuration, the V-Twin D-FEND can accommodate heavier or more complex payloads than the V3, making it especially suited for missions that demand high payload capacity without compromising stability or operational safety. Custom integrations can be configured to meet specific mission requirements, ensuring maximum flexibility for diverse operational scenarios.

Payload Over the Rotor (POR)

The Velos V-Twin D-FEND offers a unique double POR capability, allowing end users to install payloads, antennas, sensors, or a parachute module above either of the two main rotors. This configuration preserves precise balance and ensures that payloads installed in these locations do not negatively affect the CG or critical flight characteristics, as the CG of the aircraft is easily adjustable.

The elevated and unobstructed position provides full 360° lateral visibility and clear sky exposure, making it an ideal mounting point for GNSS antennas in LiDAR surveying or other precision sensor applications. It also supports advanced configurations such as a 360° panoramic camera or a dual-camera setup, with one camera mounted on the POR and a second beneath the fuselage.

This capability makes the V-Twin D-FEND particularly suited for demanding ISR operations, surveillance in complex or confined environments, and missions requiring precise aerial observation, while leveraging its heavy-lift capacity and ruggedized defense-grade design.
