From Design to Flight: The Unique Internship Experience at Velos Rotors

Velos Rotors' Amaryllis, UAV Engineer Intern, examines components of a Velos V3 aircraft with team members.

Velos Rotors provides interns with opportunities to make meaningful contributions to cutting-edge UAV technology. Amaryllis, a student from Boston University with a passion for engineering, joined the Velos team to gain hands-on experience working on innovative drone projects. Her time at Velos Rotors not only exceeded her expectations but also allowed her to refine her technical skills and grow professionally.

Amaryllis was initially drawn to Velos Rotors because of her interest in the Velos V3 UAV, a product that reminded her of previous research she had done on helicopter designs at Boston University. “The opportunity to work closely with the Velos V3, combined with Velos Rotors’ small but dynamic team, made it the perfect environment for me,” said Amaryllis. She was particularly excited about the hands-on experience Velos offered—building, flying, and testing the drones herself, as well as earning her Part 107 UAV pilot license.

“Velos Rotors has given me the steppingstones to get my drone license and practice it here,” Amaryllis shared. “I’ve also had the chance to practice my technical skills—soldering, wiring, designing parts in SolidWorks, and even helping with aircraft repairs. I’ve applied so much of my knowledge into practice here.”

The collaborative culture at Velos Rotors was one of the standout aspects of Amaryllis’ internship. She noted that everyone is open to sharing their knowledge and helping each other out. “If you have a question, you can ask anyone. Everyone is willing to teach you what you want to know,” she said. The supportive environment allowed her to work on a variety of projects, including the design of blade fold kits for the Velos UAVs, which improved the assembly process by eliminating the need for glued parts.

One of the aspects Amaryllis enjoyed most about Velos Rotors was the opportunity to be involved in every stage of the design process, from conception to testing. “At Velos, you don’t just work on the design—you get to put it on the aircraft and see it fly,” she explained. “That’s something that sets this company apart from other places I’ve worked.”

Reflecting on her time at Velos Rotors, Amaryllis expressed pride in the work she did and the relationships she built. “There’s a real sense of community here. Everyone cares about each other, and that helps us work better together and build stronger products,” she said. She especially valued the experience of flying the drones herself, something she didn’t expect to do as an intern.

For those considering an internship or career at Velos Rotors, Amaryllis emphasized the company’s collaborative atmosphere, the constant learning opportunities, and the chance to work closely with aircraft. “It’s never boring here—there’s always something to do, and the work is always interesting,” she said.

Amaryllis’ journey at Velos Rotors exemplifies the company’s commitment to providing interns with a rewarding, hands-on experience in the field of UAV technology. Her time with the team has not only strengthened her technical skills but also deepened her passion for the aviation industry.

If you’re interested in a career where your contributions matter and your voice is heard, consider joining Velos Rotors. Whether you’re looking to gain real-world experience as an intern or contribute to our innovative team full-time, we are always looking for bright, hardworking individuals like Amaryllis.
